Index Exchange: Index Exchange is a global advertising marketplace that offers programmatic solutions, including header bidding and private marketplaces.

PubMatic: PubMatic is a digital advertising technology company that provides programmatic advertising solutions, including a real-time bidding exchange.

As I said above, Ad Exchange play a crucial role in digital advertising ecosystem. The entire ad transaction is happening through ad exchange. Ad exchange is responsible for many important process mentioned below, 

A bridge between advertisers and publishers : Ad exchange is the connecting place for advertisers and publishers. Ad exchange analyzes the incoming bid requests from the publishers and matching the available inventory with the targetings specified by the advertiser.

RTB [Real Time Bidding] : Advertisers from various demand side platforms respond to the bid request if their targeting criteria are matched. Bid prices from various advertisers are managed in ad exchange and the advertiser who bid the highest wins the auction. Their ad will be displayed in that particular ad slot. 

Ad Management: Ad Exchange uses algorithms and machine learning technologies to manage the ad delivery. It takes responsibility to serve the right ad to the right person at the right time. 

Fraud Prevention: Ad Exchange always monitors the ad activities and takes actions to prevent fraud activities such as bot traffic, click fraud, etc. 

Enforce Standards and Regulations: Various industry standards and regulations related to data privacy, ad targeting, data collection, and transparency is available in the digital advertising ecosystem. Ad exchanges enforce these standards and regulations.

High Transparancy : Ad Exchange offers greater transparency in digital advertising. The advertiser can know where their ads are showing and how much they are spending for every impression.

Targeting : Reaching a specific audience is very much important in digital advertising. Through ad exchange, advertisers can target audiences based on location, demo, interest, etc. 

Ad Fraud Prevention : Ad Exchange uses various tools and technologies to prevent ad frauds like bot traffic and click fraud. 

Increase revenue for publisher : Ad Exchange connects with various advertisers. So, publishers can sell their ad space for a higher price.

Open Exchange : This is the most common type of ad exchange. Any advertisers can participate in the real time bidding auction for the available ad requests. 

Private Exchange : This type ad exchanges also operate on real time bidding. But, the invited advertisers only can participate in the ad auction. 

Mobile Ad Exchange : These type of ad exchanges only focus on mobile ad inventories. 

Video Ad Exchanges : These type of ad exchange only focus on ad inventory that is displayed in video content. 

Programmatic Direct Exchanges : Here, the advertisers directly negotiate the price with the publisher. So, the ad auction process skipped here. Through ad exchanges, advertisers can have more control over the ad delivery.
