Mostly we work around Iframe and Javascript tags. Its very useful if we knew the difference between Iframe vs Javascript tags to use them appropriately. Here, I will walk you through the difference between both tags with examples.
When you download the ad tags from a third-party ad server, the downloaded file contains both a Javascript format ad tag and an Iframe format ad tag. Sometimes, ad tags contain a combination of Javascript and No Script tags OR ad tags have a combination of Javascript, Iframe, and No Script tags. The ultimate reason for using different format tags is to show the advertisement without any issues.
When you look at the ad tags, most of us have common questions like “Why different format ad tags are available?” “What is the difference between Iframe vs Javascript Tags?” “Why are no script tags included in most ad tags?” . In this article, I will try to explain all your queries.
Why different format ad tags are available?
Before getting into the topic “difference between Iframe and Javascript”, we should know the purpose of having different format ad tags. Mostly, we upload ad tag which has a combination of Javascript and No Script, and rarely, the ad tag contains all three format tags [Iframe, Javascript, and No script]. As I said, the ultimate reason for having a different format ad tag is to show the advertisement properly.
Let’s consider, your ad tag contains all three formats, Iframe, Javascript and No Script portions. The demand side platform always sends the entire tag to the browser. The browser tries to render top-level [iframe] tag first, if it is not supported then the browser looks for the next level tag [javascript], if the browser doesn’t support both Iframe/Javascript then the browser renders the No Script and displays the advertisement. Mostly all browsers can support and execute No script code so that only no script code is included in all types of tags.
What is the difference between Iframe vs Javascript Tags?
Iframe Tags
In Iframe, “I” stands for Inline. The specialty of Iframe tags is, you can embed this iframe tag within another HTML document. This embedded content is completely considered separate from the main webpage. So, styles or other formats applied for the iframe do not affect the content on the main webpage. Because iframes are essentially separate documents within a webpage, they can also be used to display content from a different domain, which can be useful in certain situations. When you serve your ads using iframe, your ads will be displayed in the browser as you designed.
But, these iframe tags are not supported by many browsers. Because this is not good for search engine optimization. Also, browsers can’t alter the content based on the device types when using iframe tags.
Advantages of using Iframe Tags
1. Content First: When the user loads the website page, the website content is loaded first, and then only advertisements will be loaded. This is very important for the publishers.
2. Higher Security: Iframes act as separate documents within a web page. So, they do not affect the format or affect the security of the main webpage. Websites can avoid potential security risks when they allow embedded content within the iframe.

3. Content Format: The height and width of the iframe content can’t be altered. So, ads will be displayed as per their design.
4. Higher Performance: Iframes normally loaded asynchronously from the main page. So, Iframes are helpful to improve the loading time of the web page.
5. Facilitates third-party integration: It allows embedding content from other websites without needing to worry about cross-origin policy issues. This can be useful for example for embedding a youtube video or a map from Google Maps.
Disadvantages of Iframe Tag
1. Limited styling options: Iframes act as separate documents from the main webpage. So, it is very difficult to alter the content in the iframe to match the look and feel of the main webpage. So, the user experience may be affected.
2. Support Level: Most browsers don’t support the Iframe tags. So, it may display blank ads on non-supportive browsers.
3. SEO drawbacks: Search engines may not crawl the content of the iframe, which means that the embedded content may not be indexed, resulting in a loss of visibility and SEO potential.
4. Expandable Ads : Iframe tags are not suitable for expandable ads.
Javascript Tags
Javascript tags are a method of embedding content using javascript code like images, videos, audio and other elements. Javascript tags allow for greater flexibility by allowing styling and integration with the website design. So, content can be easily customized to match the look and feel of the webpage content. Javascript tags are allowed to manipulate the content and also add interactivity. That’s why most of the developers give top preference to the javascript tags.
Advantages of using Javascript Tags
1. Most browsers support javascript tags
2. Iframes are not suitable for expandable ads whereas Javascript tags are suitable for expandable ads.
3. Multiple ad sizes can be served using javascript in same place.
4. Greater flexibility in styling. So, the ad content style can be altered to match the webpage style.
5. Less accessibility issue
Disadvantages of using Javascript Tags
1.The main disadvantage of using a javascript tag is, it can be disabled by the user. If the user disabled the javascript on their browser, the standard banner only loaded, and flash content can’t be loaded. Also, it removes some ad functionalities.
2.The content in the javascript load along with the webpage content. So, it could affect the loading issues.
Why are no script tags included in most ad tags?
Normally, no script tags are called “alternate tags”. If the user disabled the scripts on their browser or the browser doesn’t support the script, at that time no script tag loads and display the alternative content. So, you can avoid showing blank ads. That’s why no script tags are included in most ad tags.
